Horse Management

Taking Care of Horses is an Art

Horse management is the art of taking care of your horse in such a way that your horse thrives and is in great condition.
That doesn't mean that you have to go broke over it!

Yes, horses are expensive. But, just like everything else, you are in control over what you spend. You can buy new blankets every year, buy the most expensive fly spray, and feed the most expensive hay. Or, you can make a blanket last another year by repairing it, buy a fly spray that is just as good without the high price tag and feed hay that does not quite cost $25 per bale.

For example, we just decided to go barefoot last year. No, it wasn't an easy decision but it turned out to be an excellent one. Of course, there are plenty of reasons to shoe your horse as well, it all depends on your horse's feet.

We also changed from feeding 3 times a day to free feeding our horses with the help of large small mesh hay nets. It helped us gain some freedom, and save some money too!

Yes, there are as many different opinions on horse management as there are horse owners. We will give you some ideas and info to think about, things that work for us and our horses.

The movement toward natural- or barefoot trimming is not just an American invention. People all over the world are looking into this direction and learning how to trim their horse' feet themselves. There are several courses available and with patience and instruction, you too can get your horse sound and barefooted.

We live in the desert and the ground is pretty hard. Our quarter horse did well for a long time without shoes, but once my daughter climbed the pony club ladder and rode more than 2 or 3 times a week it was time for shoes.

Knowing what to feed our horses is an art. We constantly have to keep our eyes open and evaluate their condition. The amount of calories they need is dependent on work load, temperature and maybe even stress level...

Winter Care of the horse is quite different from summer. Do we blanket, or not? Do we warm their water? Do we give them more hay to keep warm?
